Thumb Up 1/72 Star Wars X-Wing Model Build

Been holding off on building a model kit for a long time but really felt the urge to start again recently. I've always the loved design of the X-wing from Star Wars so that's what I decided to build! Bit small but that's alright; it's a good start to get back into this hobby. Restocked my paint options along with some brushes and miscellaneous items to help out. Planning to make an album of the build as it progresses so expect a lot of photos!

I plan to make this kit a battle-worn/weathered aircraft, similar to the box art.

Yes and no. I can mix different solid colours to something I need. (I'll include what I mixed to achieve a colour as I go) but certain parts will need a clear variant to get a glossy transparent look. Visors/car tail lights are good examples.

Probably the hardest part of the kit just because of the scale. Luke is just about 2cm here.

Speaking of being prepared, I forgot to buy orange paint. Had to mix my own just to get started. I used White (XF-2), Flat Red (XF-7) and Flat Yellow (XF-3) to get orange.

As you can imagine, the small details are difficult to get to, so some details had to be kept to a minimum. Decals were not easy task too but they're there. Added some 'dirt' to the boots as well.

Going to be moving onto the X-Wing body next. Stay tuned!

Finally had some time to get some work done on the body this week. Assembled the parts and prime everything with Tamiya Surface primer.

You'll notice that a few parts are already coloured during assembly; this is how it's included in the kit. I'll be repainting the same them with the same colours as they are a bit too glossy in comparison to what will be applied to the rest of the build.

Will have to mix my own colour for the body if I decide not to buy the rattle can I wanted.

Probably have it painted tomorrow (I hope)!

Body was painted and left to cure for 24 hours. Ended up buying the rattle can since it just happened to be in stock along with another can I needed. Last two in stock, lucky me!

At this point I can assemble everything as one but I'll be working on different areas one at a time. I think I'll start with the cockpit section.

Anyway, here are some pictures of everything painted. Colour is Insignia white. (Tamiya AS-20)

Alrighty, made some progress in the past few days so this is going to be a longer post than usual.

      Starting with the cockpit:

Painted the main cavity and the main console a Medium grey (XF-20).

When that was done I painted the seat along the little area just it German grey (XF-63). I tape off the surrounding area of the console so I can paint the middle german grey as well.

With that done, I did a quick 'worn in' effect on the seat and rear with a bit of Tamiya rust pastel.

Quick paint job on the control stick and placed into the cockpit. Assembled everything together and added the panel decals to the cockpit. Using Tamiya Decal fit strong, it helped let the decals settle into and over a non flat surface.

      Moving onto the fuselage:

Assembly was pretty straight forward. Bit of a tight fit; because of this it takes a little force to move the wings between combat mode and flight idle.

Still need to tape off some areas and paint them accordingly but after that I plan to clear coat everything and begin placing the decals.

Overall, very happy with the progress so far.

I didn't make the progress I wanted today because of a terrible strain between my neck and right arm but some progress was made at least

For this session I decide to paint some spots where decals would be placed if I were to use them. I have to admit, the 1 1/2 hour spent to mask everything to get clean lines was worth it. They're a little to 'solid' but I'll give them a slight faded look when I begin the weathering process. Masking those engines tips were a pain in the neck (pun totally intended), but the effort was worth it.

Colours used were Sky Grey (XF-19), Flat Yellow (XF-3).

      Tape removed:

There are still spots I'll need to paint but that'll have to wait for now.

      edit:

Fixed previous images. They should be clickable to view the full image now.

You used the mask over raw surface, right? I mean, there was no paint for it to tear apart or yes?

Anyways, it looks fucking amazing, can't wait to see the final result. There's no way I'd have the patience to pull this off lol

Yes, masking over the colour coat. The tape is is just strong to hold on but weak enough to not pull any paint when removed. I'm careful to remove it anyway because you never know; not waxing hair off here!

Also, thanks for the compliment! It definitely takes some patience to work on these things.

More masking and painting. Takes some time to get those small pointy areas on such a small model. It all worked out in the end though all is good.

I used White, sky grey and a small a amount of sky blue to get a light teal.

Still have a few more spots to paint until I move on.

Had some time today to get some work done the the X-Wing. For this session I decided to finish R2D2, try the some panel line wash and paint the cannons.

      Starting with R2D2...

Pretty straight forward build I'd say. Use white (XF-2) for the lower half Flat Aluminium (XF-16) for the top. Decided to use decals instead of painting. I feel like they turned out pretty good.

Decided to try out some Panel line wash on the engine fan blades before applying some to the rest of the aircraft. It will become more apparent when I apply it on the main body. Here's how it turned out on the blades:

The final job I did was paint the cannons and other misc items. Because I ran out of the rattle can paint I used for most of the aircraft, I had to go mix my own. I used White (XF-2) and Deck Tan (XF-55) in a 8:2 ish ratio. Looks pretty close to me. What do you guys think? Also, here's an extra picture with all the cannons mounted.

Masking continues as I finish up with the spots that needs to be painted instead of using decals. Stay tuned for more.

Not related to the build but I really wanted to share what I recently got.

Picked up a 1/48 WW2 Lancaster for my brother and I to build and F4U Corsair (my favourite ww2 fighter) for myself. Just to give you the scale of the Lancaster I've placed my X-Wing on top of one of the wings. Oh boy... Can't wait to get started but it'll be awhile until I start the Lancaster since I'd like to finish the Corsair first.

I like how the models look. They also seem like a lot of work.
      Have fun!

Totally forgot about this thread for awhile so thought I show you the completed model. Just below this line is a reference from what it looked like. I guess I didn't take a photo of it assembled and not weathered state. Let me know what you guys think. And yes, I'm aware the base isn't completed.
